Climate change means that the seasons of the year are affected, when we have very short springs and autumns, the bees cannot take advantage of all the flowering and the food supply will be seriously affected. The high temperatures recorded in recent summers make the bees suffer a lot and have to find natural sources of water.

How does Varroa affect bees?2024-01-12T07:45:26+01:00

Why does a swarm come home?2024-01-12T07:39:13+01:00
The bees are very neat and it is clear to them that they cannot be too many in the same hive. In the spring, when flowering is at its peak, they work hard and usually new workers appear. When this happens they themselves decide to form a new queen and thus divide into two work groups. The oldest queen, together with a good group of workers who will accompany her, must leave in search of a new place to live. Ideally, they would find some apiary available, but otherwise they may decide to nest in some cozy corner of the wild and/or in towns and cities.
What do we do with the bees that we remove and/or rescue?2024-01-12T07:38:34+01:00
Once we have rescued the bees, we will put them in an apiary independent of the farm. Since we do not know the origin, we do not know if they are medicated against Varroa (see Varroa question). At the apiary hospital they are treated, fed if necessary, and a source of water is also provided. It is monitored for one month. Once we know they are healthy, they join a working apiary. If they survive, usually in the first year they will only make honey for their own consumption and from the second year we can start collecting it ourselves.
